What Is Polymarket? A Complete Guide

The basics of the world's largest crypto prediction market — how shares work, how prices become probabilities, and how markets resolve.

01 — What it is

Polymarket, in one paragraph

Polymarket is a decentralized prediction market where traders buy and sell YES/NO shares in the outcome of real-world events. Positions are collateralized in USDC — a dollar-pegged stablecoin — and trades settle on Polygon, an Ethereum sidechain.

You're not betting against a house. You're trading shares with other participants on an open order book, and the market price of each share is the crowd's estimate of probability.

02 — Shares and prices

How YES/NO shares and prices work

Every Polymarket market asks a binary question: "Will X happen by date Y?" If you buy YES and the event resolves your way, each share pays $1. If not, it pays $0. NO shares are the mirror image.

Because the payout is capped at $1, the share price lives between $0 and $1 — and that price is the market's implied probability. A YES share trading at $0.65 implies the market sees roughly a 65% chance the event happens.

YES share @ $0.65Implied probability ≈ 65%
Settles YES$1.00 per share
Settles NO$0.00 per share
03 — The book

A central limit order book (CLOB)

Polymarket matches trades on a CLOB — a central limit order book. Traders post resting bids and asks with sizes, and the book matches them at the best available price. This is the same structure used by modern crypto and equity exchanges.

The order book is why depth matters: the size resting at each price level tells you where support and resistance can form — the raw material of order book imbalance analysis.

Bids

Buy side

Resting buy orders for shares — the demand side of the book.

Asks

Sell side

Resting sell orders for shares — the supply side of the book.

Match

Execution

Orders match at the best available price when bid meets ask.

04 — Resolution

How markets are resolved

When an event's outcome is determined, the market resolves on-chain through a DeFi-style oracle. YES holders receive $1 per share if the outcome matches; NO holders receive $1 if it doesn't.

Resolution is what makes prediction markets auditable: every outcome is a public record on the blockchain — the same record Vantex uses to verify its signal accuracy.

06 — Vantex on Polymarket

How Vantex scans it

Polymarket is one of the two venues Vantex covers. Its real-time pipeline monitors 2,412 markets — reading the L2 order book for imbalances, matching equivalent events against Kalshi for divergence, and feeding the market graph to the Path Solver.

Vantex's signal accuracy is verified against on-chain outcomes — the same settlement record any Polymarket trader can check.
